A man who sexually assaulted his own stepdaughter and kept a catalogue of indecent video recordings of her has been thrown behind bars. Judge Linda Black did not hold back as she condemned the depraved actions of the 54-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim. Before sentencing him to six years and four months in prison, Judge Black assured the man he did not have anyone to blame for his fate other than himself. “It’s disgusting, it’s outrageous and it’s very serious,” Judge Black said in Perth’s District Court last week. “You are going to jail not because (she) put you there but because you put yourself there. “I hope as you sit in a prison cell … you begin to reflect what you took from that little girl.” The court was told the man subjected the girl to years of sexual abuse, which started when she was 14. He would often record indecent videos of her and the sexual abuse, keeping them for nine years. Judge Black found the man had made a rational and calculated decision to make the recordings. “It is quite clear that you had a … deviant sexual interest … and that you acted on it,” she told him. “You knew that you were going to use the recordings for your sexual gratification later. “Fortunately because you chose to keep (the videos) for your own perverted pleasure, you were able to be caught.” On one occasion, the girl woke to find her stepfather leaning over the top of her. The man told her “It’s OK”, before sexually assaulting her. “You were lying, because it wasn’t,” Judge Black told him. “I hope you are ashamed of yourself.” In a victim impact statement, the now-grown woman said every one of the acts her stepfather had subjected her to haunted her daily. “I felt like I was always being watched and I still feel this way now,” she wrote in the letter to the court. “When I close my eyes I can still feel the offender’s presence.” Judge Black told the man that to call him selfish was a “gross understatement”. “You made her scared,” she said. “The way in which you behaved was sexual, it was depraved, and it was an absolute gross violation of her trust. “One day I hope you come to realise that.” The man was made eligible for parole after serving four years and four months in jail. His sentence was backdated to start in September 2023.
