Monadelphous indicates guilty plea to Kalgoorlie-Boulder workplace death charge

An engineering company has indicated it will plead guilty to a charge related to the death of an employee at a Kalgoorlie-Boulder workshop four years ago. Monadelphous Engineering Associates Proprietary Limited was charged with failing to provide and maintain a working environment in which employees were not exposed to hazards after the death of Haydyn Grubb. The 26-year-old was crushed in a worksite accident in March 2020. The family shared a statement with the Kalgoorlie Miner the day after his death, saying they were “proud as punch” of their son and brother. “Growing up, Haydyn, the fourth eldest sibling in our family, was the craziest kid of us all, always laughing and joking, involved in everything,” the statement said. “He was very family oriented and spent a lot of his time with us at home in his younger years. “After leaving school, he came into his own, with the biggest circle of friends and busiest social calendar anyone could handle.” Monadelphous’ indicated guilty plea in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Monday came after extensive negotiations between prosecutors and lawyers representing the company, with the parties reaching an agreement after hours on Friday evening. Magistrate Paul Lyons on Monday gave the defence an August 30 deadline for submitting a written plea of guilty to the court. Additional court-ordered deadlines were issued for sentencing submissions for both sides. The matter is scheduled to come before the court for sentencing on November 20.
