Mark McGowan plans more Perth to India, Japan and China flights after launch of Qantas’ direct Rome route

WA Premier Mark McGowan has revealed plans to make WA the western hub for more flights to India, Japan and China. As Perth reconnects with the world post-COVID and ahead of the launch of the first non-stop Qantas flight to Rome, the Premier said this was the State’s chance to cement its status as a flight haven. “This flight is the first time Australia has been connected to Continental Europe and is great opportunity to establish WA as the hub for Europe,” he said. “It will allow WA to grow visitation and spend into WA, helping diversify our economy and supporting long-term jobs.” The Rome flight, along with the direct routes to Johannesburg and Jakarta, which were announced yesterday, are supported by the State Government’s $195 million Reconnect WA Package. The Premier said this was only the beginning for WA’s growth in international travel. “We are working on more opportunities in India and Japan and eventually China,” he said. The Premier insisted the “fairly modest” financial support being provided to Qantas for the new routes was justified. “You do this initially to get these routes up and this is what has occurred with past acquisition of new routes and new services,” the Premier said, adding the exact terms of the agreement were commercial in confidence. “Now we’re back (from COVID), we’ve got to get it back properly,” the Premier said. “And we’ve got to get back to places that we haven’t had services to before, so we’re going to work with airlines for other destinations as well – in particular places like India, other locations in Europe.” The Premier also hinted that other European destinations were also on the radar. Speaking at The West Australian’s Leadership Matters breakfast this week, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said Paris was a possibility for a direct Perth flight while industry sources say Berlin is also a candidate. A recent Qantas study showed there was huge demand for non-stop flights, which had increased from 45 per cent to 59 per cent post-COVID. The finding is key to the success of the Perth to London route. Mr Joyce said the national carrier had seen an “incredible rebound” in domestic travel, which was now also becoming a trend internationally. “We’re seeing an increasing preference for a non-stop flights to and from Australia to make the travel experience as efficient and easy as possible and we expect that will be a permanent shift in the way people want to travel,” he said. “Our flights from Perth to London are heavily booked, we’ve fast-tracked the return of our A380 fleet which will free up our 787s to operate new routes.” Qantas has three A380 aircraft back in service with seven more to be returned soon. Mr Joyce said the Perth-London flight had also required government subsidies but quickly “got on its own two feet and was really successful” and that he was confident of similar outcomes for the latest routes. He added that airlines all over the world remained well below their pre-pandemic capacity, helping to stoke competition among destinations hoping to be chosen for new routes. “Having gone through over two years of losing $23 billion in revenue, $6 b in losses, Qantas has to start these routes with as little risk as possible. “And what the money actually helps us do is actually promote people to travel on them, which is to the benefit of the state. So it’s a win-win.” The strength of the WA economy made Perth an attractive location for new flights, Mr Joyce said, adding there was “a lot more international out of Western Australia” to come. He said the delivery of nearly 300 next-generation Qantas aircraft would make the “economics” of direct flights between Perth and India viable from late 2024 and nominated Hong Kong and Vietnam as other potential future markets.
