Residents are urged to head along tomorrow to discard all their broken electronic gadgets and hazardous household waste materials.

The free collection day on Saturday runs between 9am and 1pm at the Margaret River Recreation Centre’s carpark, thanks to a funding grant from the WA Local Government Association.

Hazardous waste includes batteries, flammable liquids, fluorescent tubes, gas bottles, garden chemicals, paint, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, pool chemicals and more.

Gadgets include broken household appliances that can’t be donated, computer gear, tablets, electrical tools and other electronic devices, toys and gaming equipment.

The Shire’s waste and health manager Chris Yates said only domestic waste would be accepted, with a limit of 20kg or litres per item.

“The household hazardous waste drop-off day is a great chance to get rid of electronic items that no longer work and can’t be fixed or donated, such as household appliances, tools and electronic devices,” he said.

“It’s also one of the safest ways to dispose of batteries, chemicals, paint and poisons, all which can have a devastating impact on the environment and your health, if not disposed of correctly.

“We encourage the community to come along and support this fantastic initiative to help preserve the pristine environment we’re so lucky to enjoy here.”
