Strong field entered for Wingless Sprint WA Title as Albany hosts Easter Showdown with Late Model Grand Prix

Albany Speedway Club will host its bumper two-night Easter Showdown meeting this weekend, featuring wingless sprints, late models and super sedans. In an actioned-packed weekend of racing, the highlight of the event will be the 2024-25 Wingless Sprint WA Title that is held at Attwell Park Speedway for the first time. More than 20 drivers have nominated for the historic title, headlined by reigning champion Blake Iwanow. The annual Late Model Easter Grand Prix will also be contested plus a super sedan feature to round out a huge meeting of racing. Blake Iwanow is the form driver of the wingless sprints field, having won nine feature races this season but his bid to defend the title that he won at the Perth Motorplex won’t be an easy one. His brother Matt Iwanow is a four-time WA champion and comes with strong form this season as well. Brandon Wedge is a three-time runner-up in this event and would desperately like to go one better this weekend while Daran Humfrey has also finished on the State title podium previously. Tommy Britton comes into the title as another fancied competitor, having won the recent 20-lap feature race in Albany earlier this season. Britton defeated Blake Iwanow and Matt Iwanow while Heydon Hicks and Kurt McKain rounded out the top five in the trip to Albany. Both Hicks and McKain are nominated for the title while Blake Scarey and Jordan Johnson are other drivers with a feature win to their name this season. McKain will have plenty of local support, returning to his hometown while Brandon Sharpe is another former Albany resident amongst the field. Practice for the wingless sprints will be held on Friday night before three rounds of heat races on Saturday night and a further two on Sunday night with points from those heats determining the field for the championship final in the Warner Transport and Distribution Wingless Sprints WA Title. Australian late model champion Kye Blight heads the list of nominations in the AF Towing Late Model Easter Grand Prix. Fellow star Joe Chalmers is also nominated plus locals Glynn McBeath and Wayne Coleman while Damian Hudson, Peter Walker, Greg Horan, David Nylander and Jay Bassanelli are also in the field. The late model event will comprise of more than $16,000 in prizemoney with Saturday night’s feature race winner pocketing $1000 and the winner of Sunday’s final taking home $2000. More than 10 super sedans will also race at the Easter Showdown with $1000 up to win the final on Sunday. Warren and Zac Minshull, Tristan Green, Kemble Aylett, Rob Knox and Phil Barton are among the super sedan nominations. Junior sedans will be the support divisions on both nights while production sedans and street stocks will be in action on Sunday night only.
