Albany Advertiser sports editor Cameron Newbold has ended the reign of Tom Moir as the Great Southern Football League’s best tipster.

Moir had won the GSFL footy tipping competition for the past two years but in a shortened 10-round home-and-away season, it was Newbold who prevailed.

Entering the final round, the competition was a two-man battle between Newbold and long-standing GSFL president Joe Burton.

Burton trailed by one tip and rolled the dice in a bid to overtake the leader, selecting Denmark-Walpole and Albany.

Newbold stuck to his guns and went with Railways to beat the Magpies, and Mt Barker to win over the Sharks — both of which were correct.

Newbold has chosen to donate his winnings to the Proudies Foundation, given his link to Warrick Proudlove through local football when they were teenagers.

“It was a lot of fun again, and in a shortened season, those lineball games were vital,” Newbold said.

“Someone had to knock Tommy off. He had the crown for a couple of years.

“Joe Burton was brave in the final round, to his credit, but the Bulls and Tigers served me well in the end.

“The Proudies Foundation is something close to me, having known and played against and with Warrick, and every dollar helps his family and support network with the ongoing costs involved in his tough battle.”

Newbold finished on 27 correct tips to defeat Burton, who ended up with 24 — the same total as Moir, Wellington and Reeves director Kathleen Mier and so-called footy expert Tim Edmunds.

As he winds up his time as a local politician, Albany MLA Peter Watson finished with the wooden spoon for the second year running on 23, and will have to rely on his beloved Collingwood in the AFL to bring him some footy joy in 2020.
