Porongurup winery Ironwood Estate Wines returned from the recent WA Boutique and Single Vineyard Wine Show with a little bit of extra luggage after claiming two trophies. Its 2021 shiraz not only claimed an award for being the best shiraz, but also for being the best red at the show. Ironwood Estate owner Gene Harma said the recognition was a reward for the family’s commitment to deliver quality cool climate wines. “As a small family run business, an award of this calibre is welcome and a top-shelf result,” he said. “We have had two outstanding shiraz vintages of recent, and this best-in-show award builds on a gold last year for the 2020 vintage. “The Porongurup region has an ever-growing catalogue of success and it is great to add to this legacy.” The boutique show has been run by the Blackwood Valley Wines Association for more than two decades. As well as being a showcase of wines grown within the Blackwood Valley, the event is also open to boutique producers which crush less than 250 tonnes annually and single vineyard WA wines. Mr Harma said the region had so much to offer at this time of year. “We can’t wait to open our doors to friends and visitors alike this festive season,” he said.
