Albany MLA Scott Leary and O’Connor MHR Rick Wilson took part in Albany’s Indian community’s Onam celebrations which attracted about 55 families to a feast at the Kalgan Hall last month.

Onam is an annual harvest and cultural festival to mark the Malayali New Year and is celebrated mainly in the Indian state of Kerala.

Mr Leary and Mr Wilson jointly opened the event on September 14 and watched the Thiruvathira dance, which is performed by women in small groups.

Mr Leary said it had been an enjoyable occasion.

“The afternoon was a feast for the senses with traditional music, dance, and a community feast where, as tradition demands, I got to eat with my hands,” he said.

“It was great to see a part of the diversity of our community and how it enriches our city.

“Onam is not just a cultural event, it is a timeless reminder of the values held of equality, harmony, and prosperity.

“It reflects the rich traditions of Kerala and the spirit of King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a golden era of fairness and abundance.

“What makes Onam truly special is that it transcends barriers of religion and caste, bringing people together in celebration.”

Families who have completed 10 years in Albany were honoured by the Mr Wilson, who presented them with a traditional shawl, and Mr Leary, who gave them a memento.

The celebrations lasted around 10 hours and included a tug of war and other traditional games.

The food was provided by the participants who dished up a vegetarian banquet.

Jose Isaac delivered the Onam message while program convener, Jobison Jacob, led the events.
