Sounness Park was coloured pink last Saturday, as Mt Barker players took to the field against North Albany donning pink jerseys and socks to raise awareness of the affects of breast cancer in the community.

The Bulls reserves jerseys incorporated a pink strip down their centre, a fitting on-field tribute to those in the community impacted by breast cancer.

Many of the league players in the following game also donned the pink socks in support of the cause, the bright colour standing out against the club’s usual green and black colours.

The Bulls players, supporters and club members raised more than $7000 for Breast Cancer Care WA from donations across Saturday afternoon, an impressive figure for a small country club.

Reserves captain Cameron Ward organised the team’s pink round, and said the generosity of donations across the day showed how close the cause of raising awareness for breast cancer was to many hearts in the town.

“We’ve had a few players, past players, and families in the club affected by breast cancer, so it’s a cause that hits home for a lot of our boys,” he said.

“We wanted to offer a bit of support in any way we can, and everyone in the club really got around it which was great to see.

“We’re a small country community and these things are felt deeply and we want to support our group when we can, not just with this but with other issues in the community as well and I think that’s something we’ll try and continue to do.”

The club raised a total of $7150, with ladies’ day also in full swing.

The club rooms sported matching pink and white decorations, as the women of the club came together for an afternoon of social fun and fundraising, with money going back into the club and also into the breast cancer donation tins.

On the field, the Bulls won both the reserves and league games over the Kangas to add to the day’s atmosphere.
