Anyone who uses the road to the port will know full well the cause of the increase in the pigeon population.

They feed on grain spillage from the trucks but few seem to get hit.

Unfortunately this is not the case out on grain routes such as Chester Pass Road, where many black cockatoos (and probably other species of parrots) already listed as threatened by BirdLife have been killed feeding on grain spillage over the years.

The only solution for no grain spillage at all would be improved loading methods and covered trucks.

Perhaps there should be new legislation for this, spot inspections by the relevant government department before trucks leave the loading facility (this would ensure there is no loose grain on them), and fines for non-compliance.

Grain companies and truck owners would soon comply.
