Jerramungup crash: Double fatality to start Easter weekend after car towing a caravan collides with a truck

Two people have died in a tragic start to the Easter long weekend in the Great Southern, killed when a vehicle towing a caravan collided with a truck on South Coast Highway near Jerramungup. Police said a blue Kenworth truck towing trailers and a white Isuzu D-MAX ute towing a caravan were travelling east between Jerramungup and Ravensthorpe when they collided about 12.30pm on Thursday. The driver and passenger in the Isuzu — a man and a woman — died at the scene. The 59-year-old male driver of the road train was taken by St John WA to Albany Health Campus for treatment. The Isuzu and caravan were removed from the scene, between Rabbit Proof Fence Road and Robs Road, on Thursday. The wrecked road train remained on the side of the highway, about two hours north-east of Albany, on Friday morning. South Coast Highway between Brook Road and Rabbit Proof Fence Road was closed after the crash. It was reopened with a 40km/h speed limit in place on Friday. Main Roads WA has issued a warning for drivers to exercise extreme caution in the area. A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews from Albany Fire and Rescue Service and several volunteer brigades, including Jerramungup and Bremer Bay, attended the scene. WA Police urged drivers to travel safely and take care on the roads over the Easter long weekend. The deadly crash comes after an elderly pair had to be cut from the wreckage of an accident on Albany Highway near the Lion Street junction in Centennial Park in Albany on Thursday morning. On Wednesday night, a woman in her 30s was lucky to escape with her life when her Mitsubishi rolled in West River near Ravensthorpe.
