Albany Town Square was filled with colour on Friday morning as headspace Albany hosted its annual Mad Hatters Tea Party, marking the official launch of Mental Health Week. The beloved community event, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, attracted a large and colourful crowd on a sunny Albany day, with mad hatters young and old donning bright headwear to celebrate mental health and wellbeing. The tea party brings Albany’s mental health organisations together with the community every year for a day of fun and connection, creating an opportunity for attendees to learn about the services available in the region. Town Square was filled with colourful stalls held by mental health and community organisations from across the Great Southern including headspace Albany, Amity Health, Albany Youth Support Association, Anglicare, Palmerston, Albany Pride, and Depression Support Network Albany. There were also food trucks, face painting, and free activities. The proudest hatters among the group gathered for the best hat parade, and participants of all ages got the opportunity to show off their creative homemade headwear. Live music filled the square throughout the day, and local performers put on a show as Albany residents enjoyed the day. The event also officially kicked off this year’s WA Mental Health Week, aiming to raise awareness about mental health, the importance of supporting people in your circle through mental health struggles, and breaking down longstanding stigma around seeking help for mental health. This year’s theme is Empowering Communities, Thriving Workforces, focusing on mental health at work in all industries across WA.
