GSSA 2025: Morris treble puts Albany Caledonian in driving seat after 5-0 win in senior women’s soccer league
A hat-trick from Libby Morris helped Albany Caledonian to a 5-0 thumping of Phoenix in the second round of the 2025 GSSA senior women’s league on Friday night.
It took Caledonians half an hour to hit their stride with Stephanie Grant opening the scoring in the 34th minute.
However, that was followed quickly by two from Morris as they increased their lead to 3-0 by half-time.
Jessica Baines fired home the fourth before Morris completed her treble in the last minute.
Two goals from Michelle Manera gave Sharks a 2-0 victory over Rovers in the other women’s senior league match.
In the men’s senior competition, Phoenix followed up their opening round draw with a 5-3 victory over Polonia on Saturday night.
They went behind after a goal from Reuben Winter only eight minutes in but trailed for only four minutes as Malcolm van Burgel and then Beau Timmer put them 2-1 up.
The high-scoring first half closed in dramatic fashion as Winter grabbed his second goal, this time from the penalty spot.
Van Burgel completed his hat-trick and Isaac Dobbe provided the breathing space with Phoenix’s fifth with five minutes to go.
Escher Nash was also on target for Polonia.
Albany Caledonian also found their scoring boots with a 5-1 win over Rovers.
Joseph Love and Fraser Grant each scored twice with the fifth strike coming from Christopher Wallace.
Rovers’ consolation came from Malachi Tsuki in the final minute.
Albany Caledonian were the big winners in the reserves league, beating Rovers 5-1 with strikes from Tyler Buchanan (2), Robson Nelson, Ben Harris and Ehler Mauw on Saturday.
Phoenix and Polonia drew 0-0 in the other game.
Phoenix walloped Albany Caldeonian 8-1 in the senior women’s reserves with Amaya Dobbe scoring three, while Denmark Rezzies matched Caledonians for goals with an identical thumping of Rovers.
There were hat-tricks for Rezzies’ Teal Gough and Jessica Kinder.
Mt Barker beat Bayswater 4-0 in the women’s development league, Kaylyn Williams scoring twice.
Polonia beat Sharks 3-0 thanks to goals from Chloe Coxall, Venja Ruggera and Miriam Ward.
In the men’s socials competition Polonia were the big winners with a 9-0 demolition of Bayswater.
Others to triumph were Old Boys, 8-2 over Albany Caledonian Thistle and Griffins 1-0 over Rovers.
Crosskeys and Sharks drew 1-1, Denmark Fairy Wrens and Rovers Vets shared the spoils 2-2 and Phoenix and Denmark Blue Wrens finished 3-3.
In the women’s socials, there were wins for Denmark Dream, Griffins and Albany Caledonian Thistle.
