Albany Regional Prison: Terminally ill inmate dies in hospital three days after suffering medical episode

A terminally ill prisoner who suffered a medical episode inside Albany’s maximum security prison has died in hospital. The Department of Justice said a 52-year-old Aboriginal prisoner was transferred to Albany Health Campus after he suffered a medical episode inside Albany Regional Prison on Sunday. A Department spokesperson said the inmate, who was terminally ill, died in hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning. A report into his death will prepared for the coroner, which is standard for deaths in custody. In data tabled in Parliament, the Albany facility catered for 479 inmates, shy of its 510 capacity, as of midnight on May 27 this year. According to the Australian Institute of Criminology’s live dashboard, there had been 602 Aboriginal deaths in custody nationwide as of Thursday morning following the 1987 Royal Commission. The data is provided by individual State and Territory authorities, with the live number potentially lagging due to reporting delays.
