Albany police investigating late night crash as stolen car smashes through front of Middleton Road house

Albany police are investigating a serious crash that left a mangled mess in front of homes on Middleton Road on Sunday night, with the occupants of an alleged stolen vehicle fleeing on foot. The incident happened in Mt Clarence and ended when an allegedly stolen car left Middleton Road and rolled down a steep embankment, crashing through the front of a house. Police said at about 11.45pm on Sunday night, a white Holden Commodore sedan struck a number of parked cars and rolled onto its roof, damaging a house on Middleton Road between Douglas and Tasman streets. Department of Fire and Emergency Services and Western Power attended the scene, and a DFES spokesperson said the crashed car was on fire immediately after the crash, however the blaze had been extinguished before crews arrived. Two parked cars outside the residence on Middleton Road were heavily damaged, as well as the front of the house and veranda. Further enquiries by police identified the Holden had been stolen from a residential address in Mira Mar. Police say the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived, and the circumstances of the crash were still being investigated. On Monday morning as the scene was being cleaned up, tyre marks could be seen on the grass of Bob Thompson Gardens opposite the crash site, as well as on the grass verge between the residences and Middleton Road. The white Holden had already been removed by Monday morning while other cars at the scene were being towed. A gaping hole in the house’s front wall was covered with black plastic and the veranda roof was still hanging with its support beam completely knocked out. It is understood the residents of the damaged house were home at the time but escaped without serious injury, but were left shaken by the ordeal. St John WA did not attend the scene, and it appears miraculously that no people were seriously hurt in the incident.
