2025 Premier’s Science Awards: Taleah Ugle is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM student of the year

Albany-born Taleah Ugle has been named Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM student of the year, receiving the prestigious award at a ceremony in Perth on Monday night. She was one of two finalists selected in that category for the 2025 Premier’s Science Awards and won ahead of Jared Williams, a Central Queensland University student from Geraldton. Ms Ugle, a UWA Bachelor of Science graduate, is about to embark on post-graduate studies in medicine and works as an Aboriginal research assistant at the Kids Research Institute Australia. The former North Albany High School student wants to be a doctor and is a passionate advocate for Aboriginal health. Stunned even to be nominated, she was delighted with her win. “I was very surprised to be a finalist but I’m very humbled and thankful,” she said. “It makes me feel inspired to just keep going. “It’s one of those wins that makes you feel like you have to do what you say you are going to do, so it’s going to be a reflective time for me, and I am going to have to continue my studies.” Growing up in Albany she was always community minded and said she had once thought about a career in politics. “I have always been passionate about justice and equality, but my dad said I would likely be disappointed with politics as an Aboriginal person,” she said. “I think everybody deserves to have equitable health outcomes and I could see by the way members of my family have been treated in the past that they have suffered. “So, looking at that from the perspective of a 17-year-old, I decided I wanted to be a doctor.” She has taken the long route to medicine, opting to complete her science degree before studying for another four years as a post-grad. That path has enabled her to make the most of her internship with the healthy skin and acute rheumatic fever prevention team at the Kids Research Institute. Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson said STEM subjects were vital. “Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are critical to diversifying our economy and creating jobs for the future,” he said. “These awards not only recognise the achievements of our world-class researchers, educators and students, but also help inspire the next generation to pursue STEM careers.” Premier Roger Cook said the awards celebrated the best scientists in WA. “By recognising and celebrating the best our State has to offer in scientific research and education, we are ensuring future generations are inspired to pursue careers that will drive innovation in WA,” he said.
