Australian actor Julian McMahon has died at the age of 56.

The Charmed and Nip/Tuck star passed away peacefully on Thursday in Clearwater, Florida, his wife Kelly confirmed in a statement with Deadline.

“Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans,” she said.

“His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible.”

The actor had been privately battling cancer, which his wife described as a “valiant” fight, as she requested privacy for the family during their time of grief.

“We are grateful for the memories,” she added.

“We wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life.”

McMahon’s screen career began in Australia in the late 1980s with the short-lived soap The Power, The Passion, before landing a breakout role on Home and Away.

The actor quickly made the leap to the US, where his brooding charisma earned him a string of high-profile television roles.

He was cast in the American soap Another World in 1993, before finding a cult following in Profiler and then Charmed, where he played demon-turned-love-interest Cole Turner. But it was his portrayal of slick plastic surgeon Dr Christian Troy in Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck that cemented his place in Hollywood, earning him a Golden Globe nomination and fan adoration during its six-season run.

Most recently, McMahon returned to his home country to star opposite Nicolas Cage in The Surfer, a Stan Original film.

His final screen role came earlier this year in Netflix’s political mystery drama The Residence, where he played fictional Australian Prime Minister Stephen Roos—a nod to his own political lineage.

McMahon was the son of former Australian Prime Minister Sir William McMahon and late philanthropist Lady Sonia McMahon.

In his personal life, McMahon was married twice.

He wed singer and actress Dannii Minogue in 1994 after meeting her on the set of Home and Away, though the marriage ended the following year. He later married Baywatch star Brooke Burns in 1999; they divorced in 2001.

Tributes are expected to flow in the coming days for the actor, who spent more than three decades in the spotlight across television, film, and fashion.
