"Not a lot of women have won this award so I feel like I'm standing on the shoulders of some really extraordinary people. I'm really grateful for the path that they led.

"And I'd particularly like to pay tribute to my mum who at 77 is still directing."

The Crown received 11 major nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, winning seven.

Olivia Colman, Josh O'Connor, Tobias Menzies, Gillian Anderson and Claire Foy won awards for their acting in the series, which also claimed the Emmy for outstanding drama series.

Australia's sole nominee Yvonne Strahovski was beaten by Anderson for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series.
