Jessie J has shocked fans by announcing her early breast cancer diagnosis, news she has been sitting on for nine weeks.

The 37-year-old singer, known for hits like Price Tag and Domino, took to social media on Wednesday with a video that explained why she had finally decided to share her personal health update.

She also revealed that she will be disappearing from the limelight while she undergoes surgery after her last public performance in the UK this month.

“Hi. I’ve been going back and forth a little bit on (if I) should share it?” she said in the Instagram video.

“I want to, but there are lots of opinions outside, and knowing that the media are going to make this way bigger than it needs to be, but also knowing that I want to share it with my fans and the people that care about me, and also I’m a sharer.

“I was diagnosed with early breast cancer.

“I’m highlighting the word early. Cancer sucks in any form but I’m holding onto the word early. I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period.”

Adding that she was able to find some humour in the situation, she told fans: “I’m getting to keep my nipples … that’s good. It’s a very dramatic way to get a boob job! I am gonna disappear for a bit after summertime ball to have my surgery. And I will come back with massive t**s and more music.”

Summertime Ball is a UK music festival, and Jessie J is still scheduled to perform on June 16.

The London native said the diagnosis came shortly before the release of recent songs, No Secrets and Living My Best Life.

“I know that the press are going to say crazy stuff, but you know what to get diagnosed with this as I’m putting out a song called No Secrets right before a song called Living My Best Life, which was all pre-planned before I found out about this...I mean you can’t make it up,” she said.

“I just wanted to be open and share it. One, because selfishly, I do not talk about it enough, I’m not processing it, because I’m working so hard. I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support, and also their own stories.

“I’m an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse.”

Friends and fans took to the comments section of her post with heartfelt messages of support for the star.

“Love you and your light! This won’t dim you down ❤️🙏 sending so much love J,” a third added.

Jessie J has a two-year-old son with her partner, professional basketball player Chanan Colman.
