Cate Blanchett has been cast in the animated musical movie remake of Pinocchio.

The Aussie actress has been named as part of the star-studded cast, along with Ewan McGregor— who will play Cricket— David Bradley, Tilda Swinton and Christoph Waltz.

The Netflix project will see Oscar winner and director Guillermo Del Toro’s vision for a stop-motion Pinocchio come to life.

“We have spent a long time curating a remarkable cast and crew and have been blessed by continuous support from Netflix to quietly and carefully soldier on,” Del Toro said.

“We all love and practice animation with great passion and believe it to be the ideal medium to retell this classic story in a completely new way.”

The film will follow the traditional tale of the wooden boy who is granted life by his father’s wish, but it looks like Del Toro plans to take a slightly darker look at the story, as Pinocchio struggles in his father’s shadow.

As hinted by the director, production was not interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It comes after Blanchett scored an Emmy nod last month, along with fellow Aussies Hugh Jackman, Toni Collette, Hannah Gadsby and Sarah Snook.

Blanchett and Jackman are used to attending the Oscars and other film industry awards ceremonies, but successfully crossed over to be in the running for TV’s highest honour.

Blanchett was nominated for lead actress in a limited TV series or movie category for her performance in Mrs America.

Jackman received his nod for lead actor in a limited TV series or movie for Bad Education.

Collette was nominated for her supporting role in Unbelievable.

Sarah Snook also received her honour for a supporting performance in the TV series Succession.
