WA Labor aren’t ‘cowboys’ Peter Dutton declares as he vows to usher in a mining boom

Peter Dutton has vowed to bring in a new WA mining boom through quicker federal approvals, as industry backed a Liberal move to rule on Woodside’s North West Shelf gas project extension within 30 days of coming to Government. Speaking in Perth on Tuesday, Mr Dutton said any further delay to the federal approval to extend the life of the major gas supply project was unnecessary after the six-year process was ticked off by the State Cook Labor Government at the end of last year. Under a Coalition Government, an incoming environment minister would seek to deal with the approval within a month of coming to office. The Liberals would also use the national interest test for approvals, and limit activists’ ability to appeal projects once underway. “I’m seeking a mandate from the Australian people, and in particular from the people of Western Australia, to make sure that we can keep mining going and to make sure that we can keep investments and approval processes flowing,” Mr Dutton said. “I want to see a mining boom. I don’t want to see our country go backwards under a Labor-Greens government and with Tanya Plibersek as the minister there would be no mining and that would be a disaster.” Mr Dutton said given the lengthy approvals process already undergone by the State Government, the Woodside-backed project should be ticked off by the Federal Minister quickly. “We can take comfort in what the Government’s gone through and the Labor Government here in WA, they’re not a cowboy outfit. “If there were credible environmental concerns on the table, surely, the Cook Government wouldn’t have approved this extension after six years.” But the Federal Government claimed the average number of projects approved on time had doubled under Labor compared to the Coalition. Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said the “reckless announcement” opened the door to legal challenges, risking the project for years. “Pre-judging projects is against the law, so Peter Dutton’s dangerous move risks sending the project to square one,” she said. “It’s a recipe for uncertainty that’ll scare off investment and kill jobs. “Clearly, Peter Dutton wants a system where getting projects approved depends more on whether he likes you, not whether you comply with the law. That’s no way to run a government.” Association of Mining and Exploration Companies chief executive Warren Pearce said the Coalition’s reforms would “cut through the noise”. “The Commonwealth has known about this pending decision for years. It’s unfair to lay blame at the feet of the WA Government. Everyone has known this was coming and it was crystallised late last year when the WA Environment approved the project,” he said. “The Commonwealth Government should swiftly remove any doubt and support this decision to create a bipartisan solution and give a vote of confidence to the industry.” Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA chief executive Peter Cock called on Labor to match the Coalition’s timeframe. “Any further delay will stall much needed investment and do longer-run risks long-term damage to Australia’s global reputation as a reliable place to invest,” Mr Cock said. Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA chief executive Rebecca Tomkinson said industry expected a decision on the extension would come before the current March 31 deadline. “There is no reason any project assessment should take six-plus years,” she said. “Protracted approvals processes do nothing to improve environmental outcomes, but they do severe damage to Australia’s ability to attract investment in the projects we need to maintain our energy security and keep growing our economy.” The announcement came despite Mr Dutton’s comments on Tuesday confirming he would repeal Labor’s production tax credits, which provide tax incentives to mining companies for renewable hydrogen and critical minerals. Resources Minister Madeleine King said the decision would mean smaller, locally based mining companies would miss out on the support from the program, which would back their operations during exploration. “Most of the Australian minerals and exploration companies that do all the hard work and critical minerals, are not the most well-funded,” she said. “They’re not the BHPs and the Rio Tintos, they’re the smaller risk-taking operations that have to go out and do the super hard yards of exploring in the middle of our vast country and then try and bring these deposits to reality.” Curtin MP Kate Chaney said the assessment process should be allowed to continue. “The federal process looks at different issues to the state process, and we haven’t yet come to a conclusion as to whether or not there are environmental and heritage issues that would prevent this project from, on balance, being good for Australia,” she said.
